The Story of Yama and Paundaraka the Buffalo

Long ago, there was a mighty buffalo named Paundaraka. Paundaraka was strong and brave, but he was also very calm and patient. He lived a peaceful life, always treating other creatures with respect. His gentle nature and inner strength made him different from others.

One day, Yama, the god of justice and death, was looking for a companion to help him in his duties. Yama was responsible for guiding souls to the next world, and he needed a mount that was both strong and calm to carry out this important work.

As Yama searched, he came across Paundaraka. He noticed how Paundaraka was not only powerful but also gentle and steady. Yama knew that Paundaraka’s patience would help him stay calm while guiding souls on their journeys.

Yama approached Paundaraka and asked, “Would you be willing to become my vaahana, my special companion?”

Paundaraka thought about it and agreed, saying, “I would be honored to help you, Lord Yama.”

From that day on, Paundaraka became Yama’s loyal vaahana. Together, they travel between the worlds, bringing balance and peace, with Paundaraka carrying Yama calmly and steadily.

And that is how Paundaraka, the noble buffalo, became the faithful companion and mount of Yama, the god of justice.
